I’m often asked where I source my vintage furniture. The short answer is here, there and everywhere!
I’m not being flippant. The second hand furniture market is booming! So if looking for vintage furniture you need to search in multiple places and turn up consistently if you want to snag that dream piece.
First measure the spot you want the furniture to go. That way if you find the perfect piece you can be confident that it’ll fit your space.
Second be flexible and prepared to use your imagination. Just because in its previous life it’s been a dressing table doesn’t mean it can’t be a desk or a sideboard now.
Where to look
- At home
The first place to look is in your own home. Do you already have something that's just missing a little TLC or imagination? That’s crying out for a makeover? You could be pleasantly surprised. Failing that look to your parents or grandparents. They may well have a piece of furniture they’d be happy to see go to a good home.
- Charity shops
You never know what you can find at a charity shop. You might be lucky and spot the perfect piece of furniture, just waiting for its new home! Many of the larger charities have stores dedicated to furniture alone. Search online for your nearest one.
- Used furniture stores
Check out used furniture stores or dealers near you. These are a good source of quality used furniture. They may be pricier than charity shops but can provide a greater selection of furniture and often in better condition. Don’t be afraid to bargain and always check if delivery is included in the price.
- Online auctions
Online auctions are also a great way to source interesting pieces. By setting the maximum amount you want to spend up front you can avoid the temptation to keep bidding outside of your range. Always check the location listed as sometimes they can be quite a distance away. Be aware that you’ll have to factor in mileage costs to pick it up or delivery/shipping costs if the piece won’t fit in your car. If you are planning to use a shipping company its best to ask the seller if they are prepared to hold the piece after the auction is over until you can get it picked up. Sometimes sellers are on a time limit and need the piece gone ASAP.
- Online marketplaces
If you're looking for some unique furniture to spruce up your home, then the internet is a great place. Facebook marketplace and Gumtree provide an easy way of finding local sellers. Remember though, competition can get pretty high so don't wait too long before making contact or else risk missing out on what could've been yours.
Check in a few times a day at least and again if you can’t collect it right away check with the seller before you buy.
There are lots of other selling platforms online where you can buy furniture in its original finish or painted . As vintage furniture makes a comeback more selling platforms are popping up to meet the demand. Do your research and find the one that suits you.
- Auctions
Check out your local furniture and general household auctions. Many are carried out online as well as in person. There’s usually a viewing day where you can see the furniture before the auction takes place. Best to have a maximum price in mind so that you don’t get carried away. Remember auctions have additional fees such as buyer’s premium and or internet surcharges which are added to the hammer price. Check out each individual auction house’s fee breakdown before you bid to avoid any nasty surprises. Auction houses have a fast turnover so be aware they’ll want you to collect the items you’ve won as quickly as possible. Always read the small print before you bid.
